Retail sales in May painted a mixed picture of consumer trends
While American households seem stable, their spending enthusiasm is waning amid increasing trade tensions. Overall retail and restaurant sales declined by 0.9%, marking the steepest drop since January, largely due to reduced purchases of vehicles and fuel. Partly driven by falling prices, this decline also reflects earlier shopping ahead of new tariffs.
