Curious Saturday: Retiring “technology” for a more precise future

We use the word technology for everything from toothpicks to Teslas — but maybe it’s time to rethink it. As Guru Madhavan in the FT writes, the term has ballooned into a vague catch-all that blurs distinctions, masks accountability, and strips tools of their human origins.

Words matter. When we lump every advancement under one umbrella, we lose sight of intent, craft, and responsibility. The ancient Greek technē kept the maker in view — someone who stood by their work. Perhaps it’s time to return to that precision, so we can better understand not just our tools, but the choices behind them.
