Europe’s hidden heat risk

This summer, heatwaves are estimated to have claimed 2,300 lives in just 12 European cities. Climate change has intensified temperatures by up to 4°C during these events.

Europe warms twice as fast as the global average; its urban areas — characterized by concrete and limited green space — are particularly vulnerable. In London, a day at 22°C can raise mortality risk significantly compared to other locations experiencing higher temperatures.

Cities like Bologna, Milan, and Paris face heightened risks due to ageing populations and urban heat islands.

Without adaptation measures such as improved cooling infrastructure and increased greenery, heat-related deaths could triple by 2050. Building resilience must happen now.
